Icomera powers TfL’s CCTV trial in London buses

CBR Staff Writer Published 12 November 2008

Transport for London (TfL) has embarked on a six-month CCTV trial in its buses in North London. With the trial, TfL expects to analyse if technology can help it improve safety in buses.

Live images from the CCTVs will be monitored by TfL and the Metropolitan Police’s Transport Operational Command Unit, through a central control centre.

Under the trial, 21st Century CCTV, a division of TG21, has equipped 21 double-decker buses with LIVEview system, powered by Moovbox real-time communications technology from Icomera, a provider of cellular broadband gateways.

The LIVEview system comprises a ProGuard digital video recorder (DVR) developed by 21st Century CCTV, and is connected to a Moovbox M200 Mobile Broadband Gateway. Ola Sjolin, CEO of Icomera, said: “Our mobile gateways employ patented switching and load balancing technology that leverages multiple cellular backhaul links to provide the fastest possible connection for public safety applications such as this.”

Moovbox M200 Mobile Broadband Gateway is a multi-radio, ruggedised in-vehicle communications device that delivers Ethernet, Wi-Fi and GPS over a range of carrier-class backhaul networks. It connects Wi-Fi client devices and mobile carrier technologies including 3G UMTS/HSPA, TD-CDMA, FLASH-OFDM, iBurst and WiMAX. Icomera has added the Moovbox product family to its portfolio after the acquisition of Moovera Networks in July 2008.

Through Moovbox technology, drivers of TfL buses can activate a high-speed link to enable operators view live or recorded footage in real-time. David Dent, managing director of 21st Century CCTV, said: “The Moovbox has a proven track record of successful deployments with some of the world’s largest transport operators, many of whom also use our ProGuard DVR technology for in-vehicle security.”
