CBR Staff Writer Published 24 December 2008

Expects to combine Huawei's optical technology with Global Marine's submarine engineering.

Network infrastructure company Huawei Technologies and UK-based submarine cable provider Global Marine Systems have launched a joint venture company called Huawei Marine Networks to target the submarine cable market.

The JV is expected to combine China-based Huawei's optical technology with submarine engineering from Global Marine to provide submarine network equipment and related services. The company is headquartered in Tianjin, China with R&D institutes and manufacturing bases in Beijing, Shenzhen, and the UK.

Ping Guo, chief strategy officer at Huawei, has been appointed chairman, and Ian Douglas, director at Global Marine, has been named CEO.

Guo said: Some industry-leading players have been dominating the submarine cable market for many years. Recently, Huawei successfully completed submarine cable expansion projects for CAT, Hibernia, Med Nautilus, and Level 3. Huawei Marine will bring together both parent companies' expertise and resources in this area to provide end-to-end submarine cable solutions.

Ian Douglas, CEO of Huawei Marine, said: Based on Huawei's optical network leadership, powerful R&D resources and exceptional reputation for customer service with Global Marine's expertise in the installation and maintenance of subsea systems, Huawei Marine is committed to becoming a world-leading submarine cable solution provider.
