CBR Staff Writer Published 10 March 2011

Internet2 will increase its network’s bandwidth from approximately 100 Gigabits per second to 8.8 Terabits per second

Ciena, a provider of network services, and Internet2, a networking consortium led by the research and education community, have partnered on a 100G national network in support of the US Unified Community Anchor Network (U.S. UCAN) project.

Under the partnership, Internet2 will increase its network's bandwidth from approximately 100 Gigabits per second to 8.8 Terabits per second to provide the necessary capabilities to connect over 200,000 community anchor institutions nationwide as part of the US UCAN project.

In addition, the new Internet2 network will support the growth in capacity needs by the research and the higher education community.

Ciena said that Internet2 will use its ActivFlex 6500 Packet-Optical Platform equipped with WaveLogic coherent optical processors for its new network and will leverage its ability to deliver high network capacity while reducing overall operational expenses through automated wavelength provisioning and restoration.

Internet2 is upgrading its national network through a federal stimulus grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration's Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP).

Ciena global field operations senior vice-president Mike Aquino said their partnership with Internet2 will deliver leading edge new national network underscores the company's ability to meet the advanced networking needs of the research and education and high performance computing communities.
